Organizer of the inaugural Buss Ball Father & Son Cricket Festival, Samuel Peters, said Sunday’s event is geared towards the celebration of fathers while highlighting that good fathers and positive role models still exist in today’s society.
“We understand that things have changed over the years and a lot of negativity has come when you think about fathers. We have such a rich cricket legacy here in Antigua that I think it is something that should be celebrated and so we decided that we were going to make this happen. We had a bit of negativity at first … where you’d hear, so what happen to the daughters too? But the truth is that we are trying to celebrate cricket legacy and … when you think about a legacy with men, the legacy really goes on through the sons. Unfortunately, we may not want to see it that way but it’s the truth, as it’s the seed that carries on that legacy,” he said.
Speaking on the popular Observer Am programme with host Dr Jacqui Quinn, Peters revealed that over 25 father-and-son pairs have expressed interest in the event slated for the Liberta Sports Club playing field on Sunday.

“So far we’ve been able to get about 30 father-and-son pairs but of course, not everyone is going to be able to play because some people are either up in age, some persons are probably traveling and so it’s just a fact we won’t be able to get everyone there at the same time but that’s just how things are. This festival is all about celebrating fathers, their achievements, their legacy and having a fun-packed day because it’s not only just fathers, we want to bring out the family as well,” he said.
The veteran player went on to explain however, that it’s not just about cricket as there will be games and entertainment for all coming through the gates at Liberta, including the opportunity to win a 2013 Honda Fit.
“It’s the perfect vehicle for you to drive away in so that is the premier prize and each ticket you buy for $25, even if you don’t come to the game, you’re still eligible to win the car. There will also be some appliances; there will be a TV, a fridge and a stove that will also be raffled but if you’re at the grounds, throughout every hour or so, we’ll try to give prizes to persons randomly,” he said.
Tickets for the event is $25 per adult while children between the ages of 13 and 17 will pay $10. Children 12 and under will enter for free. Action bowls off at 10 am and there will be entertainment by 2024 Carnival Road March Champions, NewGen Band.
