The Grenades FC family and the wider football fraternity in Antigua and Barbuda are mourning the death of midfielder Sherman Augustin who was fatally stabbed during Carnival Monday celebrations in St Lucia.
Reports out of St Lucia indicate that the 22-year-old was fatally stabbed while enjoying the festivities.
President of the Grenades FC, Chester Hughes, said the news has left everyone in shock.
“All of the players feel it, they are really touched by it. I personally couldn’t believe it. I was in shock and I called the manager of the club and he was in shock, the General Secretary Mr Edson Joseph is in shock; the coach was in shock. It’s just an experience that no one would like and we’re just feeling it as a club. His teammates are all in shock and everybody is surprised at his death,” he said.
“We want to express our condolence to all of his family and also the football fraternity in St Lucia because he was a national player for St Lucia. We share their pain and we are there with them,” he added.

Augustin last played for Grenades FC in the 2024/25 Premier Division competition, helping the team to a second place finish behind champions All Saints United. He also featured for the Jennings team in both the CFU Club Shield and the Concacaf Caribbean Cup.
Hughes said Augustin brought a level of energy to the squad that motivated and uplifted others around him.
“Sherman was always the life of the party; he brought his heart and discipline to every match. His journey from St Lucia to Grenades started from the early age of 19 when he joined us here at Grenades for his 19th birthday and he has been part of the Grenades family every since. He has a passion for football and he was one of our best midfielders in the history of Grenades. He stood out, he stood tall, he was a symbol of determination for the club and because of his work ethics, he was instrumental in our capturing the 2022/23 Premier Division title,” he said.
Augustin also played for Gros Islet in the Saint Lucia Semi Professional Football League. He represented Saint Lucia in international competition as recently as October 14, 2024, when he came on in the 65th minute against St Martin in a CONCACAF Nations League match.
Augustin, who would have celebrated his 23rd birthday on October 20, 2025, was widely regarded as one of St Lucia’s most promising young talents.
