Defending champions Frasziers Whip FC began their quest for a third consecutive Jamaica Women’s Premier League title with an easy 3-0 victory over Los Perfectos FC at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.
The match was a repeat of last year’s semi-final, which saw Frazsiers Whip defeating their opponents 2-1 on their way to the title. The contest lived up to expectations as both teams produced entertaining football throughout.
Shanel Spence led the charge for Frazsiers Whip with a brace in the sixth and 45th minutes, while Christina Salmon added the third goal in the 50th.
Spence, who scored 37 goals last season for Cavalier FC before transferring to Frazsiers Whip at the end of the campaign, said she was pleased with her performance.
“It is a wonderful feeling to be in different colours and also to continue scoring goals,” said Spence.
“My performance was 90 per cent because I put away two goals, which was what my team wanted me to do, and so I played tremendously well, and so you can expect a lot more goals because I am a goalscorer and, every game that I play, I am going to score.”
Dream start
Frazsiers Whip got off to a dream start when Spence slipped behind the Los Perfectos defence to steal the ball from a defender before rounding the goalkeeper and calmly slotting it into the net.
The speedy and skilful forward, who tormented the Los Perfectos defenders throughout the match, doubled her team’s lead on the stroke of half-time when she collected a pass from midfield inside the 18-yard box and fired home from close range to make it 2-0 at the break.
Former national player Tashana Vincent had Los Perfectos’ best chance in the first half, but her 12-yard effort went straight into the hands of the goalkeeper.
Frazsiers Whip extended their lead five minutes into the second half when Salmon arrived at the near post to turn in a cross from Spence, much to the delight of the small number of spectators inside the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
In another opening round game yesterday, Proven Girls FC defeated WiFi United FC 2-0. Nadine Gordon scored both goals for Proven in the 15th and 51st minutes.
