– teammates promoted during ceremony

In light of her outstanding run during the Women’s Division One Football League, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Football Club (FC) member Sandra Johnson has earned a trial with RC Lens Women, a club competing in France’s highly competitive women’s league.
This opportunity places Johnson among an elite group of players vying to break into one of the world’s most respected football environments, representing a major step forward in both her career and the continued growth of women’s football in Guyana.
Johnson led the GDF FC to victory in the Women’s Division One Football League, which concluded last weekend. However, apart from her going to France, her teammates who played a vital role in the victory received on-the-spot promotions by the Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan.
Lance Corporal (LCPL) Glengie Lewis was promoted to Sergeant; Lance Corporals Jalade Trim, Sandra Johnson, Glendy Lewis, Brinetta McIntosh, and Niomie Williams were promoted to Corporal (CPL). Recruit Aaliyah Christie was promoted to LCPL, and Recruit Yaniera Kenswill was promoted to CPL.
These announcements were made during a ceremony organised to honour the female footballers after their victory.
The ceremony was attended by Khan and other high-ranking members, representatives from the Sports Corps, club officials, and players, highlighting the significance of the achievement and the pride it has brought to the Force.
The engagement also included a ceremonial coin flip, symbolising discipline, sportsmanship, and unity. Throughout the competition, the GDF Female FC delivered a flawless campaign, not conceding a single goal. The team displayed remarkable attacking strength, scoring over 100 goals across the league.
Many of the competition’s top goal scorers and Most Valuable Players (MVPs) emerged from the GDF squad, underscoring the depth of talent and exceptional performances within the team. Their success was further rewarded with the one-million-dollar cash prize, the league’s cup, and other prizes.

In his address, Brigadier Khan reminded the players that they are not just footballers but symbols and ambassadors of the GDF. He emphasised that their conduct, bearing, and professionalism are reflections of the Force and noted that they wear their rank at all times and must therefore perform with excellence both on and off the field.
He also acknowledged the vital role of the players’ families, recognising their sacrifices and continued support. As a mark of recognition and appreciation, the team received incentives and tokens of commendation, including vouchers and other forms of support.
The female footballers are now encouraged to carry forward their legacy of excellence, knowing that they serve as role models within the Force and the wider community. They were urged to build on their achievements, uphold the highest standards of discipline, and give their very best in the year ahead, both on the field and in service to the Guyana Defence Force.
