Antigua and Barbuda’s five-member track and field team delivered solid performances at the NACAC Senior Championships held at the Grand Bahama Sports Complex, with team captain Cejhae Greene coming agonizingly close to reaching the men’s 100m final.
The highlight of the competition for Antigua and Barbuda came from veteran sprinter Greene, who narrowly missed qualification for the 100m final. Running in Semifinal 3, Greene clocked 10.35 seconds to finish 5th in his heat and 9th overall – just missing the eight automatic qualifying spots for the final.
The result was particularly disappointing for the sprinter, who holds the Central American & Caribbean Games (CAC) record of 10.00 seconds set in Colombia in July 2018. Now training with MVP Jamaica after transitioning from MVP International in 2024, Greene showed he remains competitive at the senior level despite falling short of his championship record.
National champion Dwayne Fleming made an impressive debut at his first senior international competition. The young sprinter, who claimed national titles in both the 100m and 200m events, finished 4th in the first semifinal of the men’s 100m with a time of 10.57 seconds.
In the field events, Christopher Johnson provided a bright spot for the team by reaching the men’s shot put final. The 21-year-old national record holder finished 7th with a throw of 16.98 meters in a competitive field that saw USA’s Josh Awotunde claim gold with 21.68 meters, followed by Mexico’s Uziel Muñoz (20.89m) and Cuba’s Juan Carley Vázquez Gómez (20.68m).
Middle distance specialist Jalen Dyett, the national champion in the 400 meters, competed in Semifinal 2 of the men’s 400m event. Dyett posted a time of 47.19 seconds to place 5th in his heat and 14th overall, representing his country with distinction in the longer sprint event.
