As the world celebrated International Chess Day on 20 July, the Grenada Chess Federation (GCF) salutes all those — locally, regionally and internationally — who continue to promote and develop Chess, whether as players, leaders, sponsors, enthusiasts, or otherwise.
The GCF takes this opportunity to especially salute FIDE (International Chess Federation) for its leadership of chess for over 100 consistent years, since its founding in 1924. Indeed, International Chess Day represents due and worthy recognition of FIDE’s founding 101 years ago today. Over the years, under a single umbrella body, FIDE has been organising, mobilising and embracing chess federations, extending its reach to over 190 countries globally.
We note that since 1966, 59 years ago, International Chess Day, now officially recognised by the UN General Assembly, has been celebrated internationally.
Reaffirming commitment
The GCF reaffirms its commitment to continue to promote chess in schools and communities throughout Grenada. The benefits are significant and impactful as chess helps problem-solving, increases attention span, improves communication, enhances critical thinking, and increases memory capacity.
On 19 July 2025, the GCF held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Awards Ceremony at the Grenada Olympic House. Special recognition was given to players who represented Grenada competitively in our 5 overseas tournaments over the past year, and to our sponsors who made it happen. Special recognition was also given to those volunteers who consistently ensured that our annual summer camps (held since 2020) remained major successes and continued to grow from strength to strength each year.
At the AGM and Awards Ceremony, members recommitted themselves to the service of the GCF and to our upcoming programme, which embraces both “Chess in Education” — using chess as an educational tool in schools and competitive chess.
