Former West Indies captain Jason Holder has his eyes set on a return to Test cricket.
Speaking recently on the Good Morning Jojo sport show, Holder highlighted that although he has done “really well” in T20s over the last two years, he still has a strong love for the longest format of the game.
“I think I’ve been playing really well over the last year and a-half, you know, probably my best form in T20 cricket particularly. I’ve had a year and a-half of pretty solid T20 cricket, so I’m really happy with where my game is at. I guess my only thing is — as I said before, I guess in previous interviews — I’d love to get back into Test cricket, but I guess in time that’ll happen,” he said.
Holder, who was left out of a 15-member touring squad for the October 2nd-14th, two Test series against India, with matches in Ahmedabad and Delhi, said he has spoken with key individuals within the West Indies camp and remains available for selection.
“I’ve played first-class cricket this year, played first-class cricket last year, so I’ve made myself available. I never came out publicly saying I’m unavailable. I have had conversations with Daren Sammy about Test cricket, and he’s highlighted a few things, but it’s not a case that I’m not available … I still want to play Test cricket,” he said.
There are three changes from the Test squad which recently faced Australia, with the inclusions of Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze, along with a maiden test call up for left arm spinner Khary Pierre.
Holder was replaced as West Indies Test captain by Kraigg Brathwaite in March 2021 after leading the West Indies in 37 Tests, achieving 11 wins, 21 defeats, and 5 draws. The Barbadian all-rounder opted out of a Test Series against Australia in late 2023 and last played the longest format in 2024 when he featured against South Africa in Guyana.
