President of the Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Association (ABCA), Leon “Kuma” Rodney, said he will seek a sixth term in office when the body holds it’s electoral congress later this year.
Rodney, who was first elected in 2014, served a one-year term before going on to serve four consecutive two-year terms under the association’s revised constitution.
Speaking recently on the Good Morning Jojo Sport Show, Rodney said he made the decision to seek another term in office after the candidate he was hoping to support opted not to contest the election this year.
“This is Antigua’s cricket association and not Leon ‘Kuma’ Rodney’s association. I think I remember when Mr Isaac was president; Andy Roberts and Colin Derrick and so forth and even Zorol and so forth was president. If somebody is put up to run as president, once they come and get the nomination and then the election goes down, whosoever is supposed to win will win,” he said.
“When I said I wasn’t going to run, I had someone in mind and there was no secret about that. The person came back to me and said to me that there was too much on his plate at this moment and hence, I was encouraged and inspired by that person to hold on again but I believe that person would have been the ideal one but at the end of the day, it is what it is,” he added.
Taking the Covid-19 pandemic into consideration, it would mean that Rodney has served about 11 years as president of the association as one of the longest-serving presidents in the body’s history.
Rodney said the body is currently putting all of the necessary parts together in order to host a successful AGM.
“I believe that you would have gotten a correspondence where we are asking people to update their dues and for new people to make representation. So obviously, we will be having a special AGM to take on new members. I can say that maybe before November or anything maybe after CPL, I believe you will hear much more about it,” he said.
Rodney took the reins of the association from former Leeward Islands player, Zorol Barthley, in 2014.
