Saint Lucian athletes returned to athletics competition at universities and colleges across the United States at the weekend, with four first-place finishes, two school records, and a national top-ten mark among the highlights. At least 14 athletes were in action, contesting 18 events in all for 13 different schools as the indoor season rolls on.
Returning from an injury that knocked her out of action entirely last season, Jenneil Jacobie took first place for the East Texas A&M University Lions at the Owen Hewett Invitational in Norman, Oklahoma. At the Mosier Indoor Facility, Jacobie, the 2024 outdoor conference champion, cleared 1.80m to rank 10th in NCAA Division I women’s high jump in the country.

At the Akron AL Campbell Invitational, Joy Edward got a first-place finish and a school record in separate events at the Stile Athletics Field House in Akron, Ohio. An incoming transfer to the University of Charleston, Edward threw 14.69m for the school record in shot put, just six inches off her 2024 indoor national record. She then threw a personal-best 17.59m to win the 20-lb weight throw.

The Washburn Rust Buster produced a first-place finish and school record for Kereser Augustin, running 39.20 seconds in the women’s 300m. At Topeka’s Sneed Indoor Athletic Facility, Augustin ran a personal-best time to finish ahead of teammate Isabella Kupka in 40.06 for second.

Carl Drakes continued his strong season for the Coppin State University Eagles, taking the top spot in the men’s 200m dash at the HBCU Showcase presented by Nike Running in New York City. Drakes ran 21.28 seconds for Coppin, and finished the 60m in 6.77 seconds for second place.

Also at the HBCU Showcase and running for Coppin, Rayshawn Harris opened his indoor career with a run of 2:02.77 for 17th place in the men’s 800m.
