The Antigua and Barbuda Falcons franchise is exploring the possibility of entering a team into the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL).
This is according to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jeff Miller, who said the franchise is already making queries while adding that the organisation will also hold discussions with the CPL regarding the possibility of hosting a final here in Antigua.
“Right now, there are only three women’s teams in the tournament, so we would love to do that and we would love to host the CPL [final] next year. The final is in Barbados [this year] and that was announced and we will be having discussions with CPL of having Antigua as a potential host. We have two venues here with a potential of three venues and we would be in a position to host the women’s tournament and the men’s tournament; so yeah, we will be having those discussions,” he said.
Falcons will open their campaign against the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots on August 14 in St Kitts before their first home games two days later.
Miller is hoping enthusiastic public support during the team’s matches at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
“Carnival was on the mouths of everyone here so we want to switch that discussion, enthusiasm and the support from Carnival right into the cricket and the CPL is dubbed the biggest party in sport and Antigua is loved because of it’s Carnival and we’re hoping that rush will come over to the cricket in the CPL,” he said.
Following their clash against Barbados here, the Falcons host St Lucia Kings on August 17 before hosting Trinbago Knight Riders three days later. Falcons then take on Guyana Amazon Warriors at home on August 22 before hosting neighbours St Kitts two days later on August 24.
