RUBEN AMORIM has been told he must qualify for European football this season or he risks being sacked, according to reports.
The Manchester United boss met co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe for talks this week.
The meeting was pre-arranged and not centred around Amorim’s future.
But Ratcliffe told Amorim the expectation is that United qualify to play in Europe next season, according to talkSPORT.
The Ineos chief believes the squad assembled is capable of a top-five finish, having spent £200million on upgrading the attack.
Amorim appeared relaxed when asked about the talks in his Chelsea pre-match conference.
The United boss joked: “He offered me a new contract!
“No, it was normal things just to show the support, explain it’s a long season. This is a club with more pressure maybe than any in the world.
“Last year I was very critical of the way we played. Now I think we are playing well until the [penalty] boxes. We need to be more clinical. We are in a better place compared to last year but we need to win.”
United have picked up just one win from their opening four Prem games and are 14th in the table, having finished 15th last season.

There have been calls for Amorim to change his system but the Portuguese remains steadfast in his belief in a 3-4-3 formation.
He said: “There are a lot of things, you have no idea what happened during these months but I am not going to change.
“When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man.”
