St. Joseph Church, located in King’s Park, Belize City, is hosting a “Walk, Run, or Ride for Jesus” on Saturday, July 12th, 2025, as part of its fundraising campaign to restore and repair the church’s historic buildings.
Since its founding in 1949, St. Joseph Catholic Church has served as a spiritual and cultural cornerstone of the King’s Park community. The parish was established under the leadership of Jesuit priest Reverend John Cull, who conducted the first Mass in a tent on what was then an undeveloped swamp. A year later, a modest wooden structure was erected to function as both church and school. In 1969, St. Joseph Church and School became the first Catholic institution in Belize to be housed in a concrete building—marking a major milestone in the country’s architectural and religious history.
Now, under the guidance of Reverend Amalio Chi and the newly formed St. Joseph Restoration Committee, the parish aims to raise $160,000 BZD to carry out much-needed renovations to the two principal buildings on the church compound. The restoration effort is not limited to infrastructure alone. The parish is also focusing on community revitalization, with a series of events and outreach activities designed to strengthen fellowship and support among residents. Initiatives include yard sales, clothing and food drives, the re-establishment of the church choir, children’s programs, a Bible puppet theater, and weekly prayer services.
