An explosive batting display by Qiana Joseph guided Leeward Islands Women to a comprehensive 8-wicket victory over Jamaica Women in a rain-affected seventh match of the CWI T20 Blaze at Arnos Vale Playing Field in Kingstown on Monday.
Joseph’s unbeaten 43 off just 19 deliveries, featuring three boundaries and three towering sixes, ensured the Leeward Islands comfortably chased down the revised DLS target of 51 runs with one ball to spare. Her remarkable strike rate of 226 highlighted the dominance of her performance against the Jamaican bowling attack.
After rain interrupted play and reduced the match, Jamaica Women were restricted to 48 for two in their allotted five overs. Chinelle Henry fought valiantly with an unbeaten 29 off 18 balls, while Chedean Nation provided support with 11 not out.
For the Leeward Islands, Shawnisha Hector was economical with the ball, claiming one for seven runs from her single over, though the Jamaican batters managed to score freely against the other bowlers, with both Rozel Liburd and Jahzara Claxton conceding over 10 runs per over.
In response, the Leeward Islands’ chase began with early drama as they lost two quick wickets. Hector was run out by Henry for 3, and Reniece Boyce was caught by Keneshia Ferron off Henry’s bowling without scoring. At 11/2, the match appeared to be tilting in Jamaica’s favor.
However, Joseph took control, unleashing a barrage of boundaries that quickly turned the tide. Her partnerships with Captain Amanda Edwards (3 not out) steered the Leeward Islands to victory with 4.5 overs completed, reaching 52/2.
Henry was the only Jamaican bowler to take a wicket, finishing with figures of 1/23 from her 1.5 overs, though at an expensive economy rate of 12.55. Neisha-Ann Waisome bowled a more economical spell, conceding just 6 runs from her single over.
This victory provides a significant boost for the Leeward Islands Women’s campaign in the T20 Blaze tournament after they beat Barbados by six wickets on Saturday night. On Wednesday afternoon, they will face the Windward Islands at 2:30pm with the hope of making it three wins in a row.
