FORMER Rangers star Josh Windass has emerged as a surprise January target for the Ibrox club.
Just hours after the Light Blues’ shock bid to bring him back to Glasgow was revealed, the midfielder took to social media with a cryptic message.
Windass, 31, spent two years with Rangers between 2016 and 2018.
Signed by Mark Warburton ahead of the Gers’ first season back in the top flight, he went on to score 19 goals in 73 appearances for the club.
18 of those goals came in the 2017/18 campaign as Windass finished as Rangers’ joint-top scorer across all competitions alongside Alfredo Morelos.
Windass left Rangers for Wigan Athletic in the early weeks of the 2018/19 season following Steven Gerrard‘s appointment as manager.

He has since admitted the decision to leave was “stupid”.
After 18 months at Wigan, Windass moved on to Sheffield Wednesday where he would enjoy a five-year spell.
Most of the final two years of his stint with Wednesday saw him working under Danny Rohl.
The Rangers manager was appointed Wednesday boss in October 2023 and they both left the club in the summer this year.
Windass enjoyed a productive 2024/25 campaign under Rohl, scoring 13 goals – his best return since his goal-laden 2017/18 season at Ibrox.
He moved to ambitious Championship rivals Wrexham in the summer amid Wednesday’s financial crisis with Rohl leaving too.
But just months later, a sensational reunion could be on the cards.
SunSport told you earlier how Rangers had made Windass a top target for the January transfer window.
It’s understood Rohl is working on a deal to bring Windass back to Ibrox on loan, more than seven years after the player’s departure.
Hours after the stunning transfer news emerged, Windass has taken to social media with a cryptic post.
He shared an image containing a quote that read: “People who don’t understand your silence will never understand your words.”
Windass has been playing regularly for Wrexham this season with 21 games under his belt in all competitions.
He’s scored six goals for the Welsh club and has captained them on various occasions.
Windass played 76 minutes of their last game, a 2-1 defeat to Swansea in which ex-Celtic striker Adam Idah netted a 90th minute winner.
Speaking recently, Windass revealed how he could’ve returned to Rangers in the summer.
He also revealed that he decided to stay with Sheffield Wednesday for a further year after Rohl had stayed put in 2014.
He said: “I nearly left the previous summer but with the manager [Danny Rohl] staying, I ended up staying too.
“This time, I was ready to move on to a fresh challenge. I could have gone back [to Rangers] this summer.
“I had some really good times there, a great club.
“But I didn’t think it was right at this time.”
