Jennings Secondary School (JSS) and Princess Margaret School (PMS) enjoyed the joy of triumph over their opponents on Friday in the Ministry of Sports Joma/Cool and Smooth School Football League, with three matches across three divisions showcasing the talents within the secondary schools.
JSS defeated St. Joseph’s Academy (SJA) 3-1 in the Boys U-14 division. JSS struck early with Elreekk Francois opening the scoring in the 7th minute, followed quickly by Shaquan Joseph in the 10th minute. SJA responded through Tariq Roberts in the 12th minute to make it 2-1, but JSS maintained control as Zahier Joseph sealed the victory with a third goal in the 55th minute, completing the win for JSS.
Defending Champions PMS delivered again with a comfortable win in the Girls U-20 division, shutting out Ottos Comprehensive School (OCS) 3-0. Samoya Weekes set the tone early with a 7th-minute goal. Kayla Bellot doubled the advantage in the 29th minute, and Karmiellia Hughes added a third early in the second half (48′) to complete the commanding victory.
The match of the day was a thrilling eight-goal encounter between OCS and Antigua and Barbuda Community and Academy School (ABCAS) in the Patrick A Whyte U-20 Cup that ended in a 4-4 draw. OCS’s Jahkim Benjamin opened the scoring in the 13th minute, before ABCAS’s Cody Richardson equalized in the 24th. Demarre Swift put OCS back in front in the 27th minute, but Ojahrie Mitchell leveled for ABCAS just before halftime (42′). The second half continued at the same frenetic pace with Dennison Stevens giving ABCAS their first lead in the 48th minute, before Andre Henry extended it to 4-2 in the 72nd minute. However, OCS mounted a dramatic comeback with Tafari Looby scoring in the 75th minute and Swift completing his brace in the 77th minute to salvage a well-earned point.
The Cool and Smooth School Football League continues on today, October 28th, with Boys U-16 action across three venues. At Golden Grove, PMS faces JSS at 2:15 pm followed by St. Mary’s Secondary School versus Sir Novelle Richards Academy at 3:30 pm. In All Saints, Pares Secondary School takes on All Saints Secondary School at 2:15 pm with St. Anthony’s Secondary School meeting Irene B Williams at 3:30 pm. At Antigua Grammar School, SJA plays Clare Hall Seconday School at 2:15 pm before Antigua Grammar School hosts OCS at 3:30 pm.
The league continues to provide competitive matches and development opportunities for young footballers across Antigua and Barbuda.
