RANGERS came very close to appointing Kevin Muscat as their new boss before talks collapsed late in the day.
And now an insider has explained why negotiations fell apart and Gers ended up with Danny Rohl instead.


Craig Moore started his professional playing career at Rangers, and made over 100 appearances across two spells at Ibrox.
And the Australian is close with compatriot Muscat, offering him an insight into the club’s failed pursuit of the Shanghai Port manager.
And Moore, appearing on the Go Radio Football Show, broke down chairman Andrew Cavenagh’s explanation for the Muscat deal collapsing.
Moore said: “Andrew Cavenagh has come out and I think led brilliantly when the club have needed that.

“I’ve seen a lot of stuff that came out and it was bang on, it was a timing issue.
“It was a timing issue for Rangers, knowing what they needed to do and the pressure the club were under to make sure they got somebody in as quickly as possible.
“Kevin Muscat, the timing of his league coming to an end on 22 November [didn’t work].
“There was really good discussion, but over the weekend it got to a stage for both Rangers and Kevin Muscat that it was meant to be for Kevin to stay in Shanghai and for Rangers to continue to move on through their process.
“Within 24 hours, Danny Rohl was announced and done fairly quickly.
“He was someone that they kept dialogue going with throughout the process.
“Everything that Andrew Cavenagh has come out and said is bang on the money.”
Moore also addressed the rumours that Muscat had walked due to disagreements over sporting director Kevin Thelwell’s position in charge of transfers.
He continued: “That would be wrong.
“It was more about the timing issue that didn’t sit right for both parties.”
