In recent years, in Grenada, swimming has become more accessible and less intimidating for people of all ages.
Many individuals worry that learning to swim is a difficult or complicated task, but experts say that with the right approach and basic guidance, anyone can become comfortable in the water. Whether you’re a beginner or someone looking to improve your skills, the journey to confident swimming is now more straightforward than ever.
One of the key reasons swimming is considered easy to learn is the availability of beginner-friendly classes and resources. Get Grenada Swimming is providing free lessons at numerous locations around Grenada on Saturdays. The Sandals National learn to Swim Week is coming up 7–11 July at 15 locations around Grenada. The Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Council are working to bring 3 weeks of swim lessons to all of the parishes in the 2025 Holiday Recreation Programme, Flame 2.0. Classes focus on building confidence first, helping learners get comfortable with water, practising breathing techniques, and gradually progressing to floating and basic swimming techniques. Beginners often find that their fears diminish quickly.
Moreover, modern instructional methods enhance the learning experience. Online tutorials, instructional videos, and mobile apps provide accessible and engaging ways to practice techniques outside of formal lessons. Many people find that watching videos and practising in shallow water at their own pace accelerates their progress and makes the process enjoyable. This combination of in-person and digital learning tools has made mastering swimming skills more convenient than ever before.
Introducing children to water early on fosters comfort and familiarity from a young age. This early exposure helps rid fears of the water and lays a strong foundation for future skills, making the learning process less intimidating for children. Many Grenadian parents are also taking swim lessons along with their children.
Deb Eastwood, Director of Get Grenada Swimming, had this to say: “Ultimately, the idea that swimming is difficult is a misconception. With patience, proper instruction, and the right resources, most people can learn to swim comfortably within a few weeks. Whether for safety, fitness, or recreation, taking that first step into the water has never been easier. The beaches where we teach are safe. As more people learn that free swimming lessons are readily available, the number of people who can swim keeps increasing. This helps make our parishes safer and more active, gives children a place to enjoy the summer, and gives our elderly citizens an opportunity to learn life skills. We encourage everyone to sign up for a programme this summer.”
