Leeward Islands Under-19s Women fell to their first defeat in the West Indies Rising Stars Women’s Under-19 Championship when, on Thursday, they went under by seven wickets to the unbeaten Barbados Under-19s Women at the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Ground, St Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago.
The loss means that the Leeward Islands will play in the third-place fixture against Jamaica as they needed an outright win to join Barbados in the final. A victory would have moved the sub-regional squad to 20 points and to the top of the standings but Barbados finished at the pinnacle after their unbeaten run put them on 20 points.
Barbados will face Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) in the final after the hosts defeated Guyana to move to 14 points, two points ahead of Leeward Islands and into the number two slot on the standings.
Asked to bat after their opponents won the toss, Leeward Islands were led by opener Sainavi Kambalapalli who made 41 not out off 38 deliveries. She struck six fours in the process.
Naijanni Cumberbatch was the pick of the bowlers for Barbados, picking up a five-for with five wickets for just eight runs in 3.3 overs. Erin Deane chipped in with four wickets for 17 runs in four overs.
Barbados, led by Asabi Callender who made 30 not out, easily reached their target at 68 for three, requiring 14.5 overs to do so. There was one wicket each for Jahzara Claxton (1/13), Gabrielle Harrylall (1/17) and Kambalapalli (1/26).
Meanwhile, T&T pulled off a close two-wicket triumph over Guyana as they booked their spot in Saturday’s final against Barbados.
Batting first, Guyana reached 70 before they were all out in 26.4 overs. Latoya Williams hit a top score of 16. Brianna Harricharan was the pick of the bowlers for the opponents with five wickets for 20 runs in six overs.
T&T then reached 71 for eight in 22 overs with a top score of 15 from Kristina Naipaul. Danellie Manns snatched four wickets for 18 runs in seven overs bowling for Guyana
Also on Thursday, the Windward Islands won by four wickets over Jamaica at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex.
Batting first after winning the toss, Jamaica were bowled out for just 51 runs with their best effort coming from Moniqueca Reid who made 19. Selana Rose did the damage with the ball for the opponents, claiming six wickets for just four runs in 7.4 overs.
Windward Islands then reached their target at 55 for six in 21.5 overs. Kaela George and Natalia Phillip both contributed to the win with 14 runs. Brianna Plummer snatched five wickets for 12 runs in seven overs for Jamaica.
