A man was shot and killed after he was chased Thursday morning by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) in Durham County.
Philip Aiken Brown was pulled over on Interstate 85 for driving without a valid registration plate, according to NCSHP. The trooper discovered Brown had several orders for his arrest and gave them false information during questioning.
When Brown raced away, the trooper pursued, at up to 85 mph on I-85. Brown got off the interstate at Red Mill Road, lost control of the truck and crashed into an embankment.
An NCSHP spokesman said he did not comply with commands and the trooper saw him with ‘a dark object’ in his hands. The trooper fired a shot, hitting Brown.
The trooper could be heard on Broadcastify radio traffic saying “shots fired, shots fired,” and asking for backup.
“Get the city and county going,” the trooper said. “I got one at gunpoint, not moving … I am by myself.”
Brown was taken to the hospital, but he died from his injuries. He was 53 years old and from Creedmoor.
Trooper Nolan J. Neal was identified as the one who fired the shot. Neal is being placed on administrative duty while an internal investigation takes place.
The School for Creative Studies in Durham County was briefly placed on secure status as the crash occurred near campus.
