Antigua and Barbuda’s Micah McKenzie bowled a magical spell, bagging four wickets for 35 runs in 10 overs, but the Leeward Islands Under-19s Men suffered a narrow one-wicket loss at the hands of Jamaica Under-19s Men in their final match of the West Indies Rising Stars Men’s Under-19 Championship in St Kitts on Monday.
The result means that Leeward Islands finished second from bottom on the eight-team standings with 9.2 points.
Playing at the St Paul’s Sports Complex in Basseterre, McKenzie claimed the wickets of Tyriek Bryan lbw for 41, Pajay Nelson caught for nine, Rhevon Morgan lbw for no score, and Vitel Lawes bowled for no score — but could not stop the Jamaicans from reaching their target at 150 for nine in 39.3 overs.
David Dewar contributed with 39 off 63 deliveries for Jamaica while Amoree Jones picked up three for 25 in three overs also bowling for the Leeward Islands.
Earlier, Leeward Islands were bowled out for 149 in 36 overs after they were asked to bat by Jamaica who had won the toss. De-Antre Drew was the top batter for Leeward Islands with 24 runs from 48 balls while Devanand Singh and Amoree Jones both made 17.
There were two wickets each for Roshawn McKenzie (2/11), Morgan (2/18) and Tamarie Redwood (2/46) bowling for Jamaica who finished fourth on the standings with 20.26 points.
The two top teams USA Under-19s 1 (30.6 pts) and Barbados Under-19s Men (26.6 pts) will clash in the final slated for July 24. There will also be a third place clash between the Windward Islands Under-19s and the Jamaica Under-19s.
Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago will play for sixth and seventh while Leeward Islands and USA Under-19s 2 will clash in the seventh place fixture also on July 24.
