Antigua and Barbuda’s Tanez Francis, for the second straight match, led with the bat as he racked up a half-century to guide Leeward Islands Under-17s to a confident DLS triumph over Guyana Under-17s in the West Indies Rising Stars Under-17 Men’s 50 Over Championship at Gilbert Park in Trinidad on Thursday.
Francis, captain of the sub-regional squad, hit seven fours and two sixes as he amassed 74 runs off 99 delivers to help lift Leeward Islands to 227 for six in their allotment of 50 overs. The Antiguan’s latest knock comes on the heels of his 110 against Jamaica just one day earlier to inspire his team to a one-wicket DLS win.
Electing to bat after winning the toss, Amoree Jones contributed to the Leeward Islands’ total with a half-century of his own, striking five fours and a six on his way to 52 off 74 deliveries. Antigua and Barbuda’s Hosea Roberts batted not out at 34 runs from 62 balls with two fours.
Bowling for Guyana, Navendra Sankar bagged three wickets for 40 runs in 10 overs.
Jathan Edwards then bagged three for 33 in nine overs and Kunal Tilokani snatched two for 32 also in nine overs, as Leeward Islands removed Guyana for 163 in 36.5 overs. Parmeshwar Ram was the top scorer, with a laboured 35 off 50 deliveries at the top of the order. Emmanuel Lewis contributed with 26 off 30 deliveries while Shamar Apple added 19 to the effort before he was out lbw to Eirette Richards.
In other matches contested Thursday, Trinidad and Tobago beat Jamaica by 91 runs also on the DLS system and Barbados had the better of the Windward Islands by 107 runs.
Leeward Islands are second on the standings with 32.4 points while Barbados head the table with 35.2 points. Trinidad and Tobago are third with 23.2 points, Windward Islands fourth with 19.6 points with Guyana and Jamaica in fifth and sixth on 17.4 and 11.8 points respectively. All teams have played two matches.
