Motherwell vs Rangers preview
The league campaign gets underway for Motherwell and Rangers this weekend but they’ve already had a couple of competitive games under their belt.
Three wins and a draw in Premier Sports Cup action for Motherwell saw them top their group and safely progress to the next round.
They backed that up with a draw against Hertha Berlin last weekend too in final preparation for this test.
It’s a period of change at Well after Jens Berthel Askou replaced Michael Wimmer, who departed suddenly at the end of last season.
It’s also a summer of change at Rangers with Russell Martin’s appointment seemingly an uninspiring one with the majority of the Gers support.
But the early signs will have changed plenty of punter’s minds, particularly having progressed in Champions League qualifying in midweek.
Rangers rode their luck at times in both legs of the win over Panathinaikos with Jack Butland producing some great saves.
But when their chances came along they took them and in Djeidi Gassama they have a young winger that the fans can get excited about after notching in both legs.
The pre-season results have been a bit up and down for the Ibrox side but they stepped up when it mattered. This is the sort of game that has slipped them up in the past.
Coming on the opening weekend, in the late slot on Saturday and in front of the TV cameras, Gers must start positively if hoping to close the gap to Celtic.

Selection dilemma
Findlay Curtis was replaced by Djeidi Gassama in midweek and the new boy scored for the second consecutive Champions League game.
A good dilemma for Martin then with Curtis being a standout throughout pre-season and a choice of winger to operate with.
For that reason, I’m bailing out and picking an anytime scorer rather than a first scorer – though that could change if Gassama is included from the start.
Not fully convinced with the Rangers defence as it stands and Butland has helped them in the two competitive games so far, so fancy Motherwell to score. Rangers have to win early though.
