BRECON CARREG CDF 10km, Cardiff, September 7
In what organisers described as “the biggest ever running of the event”, thousands of runners and spectators took over the Welsh capital as saw Omar Ahmed extend his love affair with Welsh running, despite the rain.
The Birchfield-based Ethiopian took first prize in the men’s race with a time of 29:27 as Natasha Wilson claimed the top spot in the women’s section in a personal best 32:42, to confirm their wins in the R4W 10km Series.
Ahmed said: “Despite the weather conditions, today’s been good and I’m so happy to win the race. There was a good, supportive crowd out cheering, which is why I always like running in Wales. I really like the CDF 10K, the course, the crowd and the organisation were beautiful.”
The fast-improving Pontypridd Roadents club took the next four placings led by Dan Nash’s 30:08, with David Hamilton third.
Wilson said: “I ran a PB today so I’m happy. I wanted to come here and break sub-33:00 and I did that. It was a bit of a last-minute decision as I’ve got the Copenhagen Half next week, so I wanted to run out today as prep and to give me a bit of confidence. It’s always nice to come out to Cardiff as there’s a good group of guys who pull me through. It’s great to be back in the capital and racing in front of a Welsh crowd.”

GREAT NORTH 5km, Newcastle, Tyne & Wear, September 5
This year’s AJ Bell Great North 5km event was once again the curtain raiser to a weekend of running, as the 5km event took place around Newcastle and Gateshead’s Quayside, Martin Duff reports.
The much-anticipated international events drew in a strong local crowd who saw Thailand’s Kieran Tuntivate just get the drop over the North East duo from Morpeth Harriers, Scott Beattie and Rory Leonard.
In a similarly close elite women’s race and it was Belgium’s Lisa Rooms who just headed Kate Axford in 16:00, as India Weir took third over the three laps of the fast and flat one mile circuit.

It is now seven years since Louise Small won silver medals in both the 2017 and 2018 English National cross-country championships but the Aldershot 33-year-old still has what it takes and here, won the women’s section in 16:14.
This was just ten seconds outside her personal best set last year in the Guernsey Easter series.
