National basketballer T-Shawn Lewis was crowned king of 1v1 in Antigua after beating fellow finalist Humroy Wright 21-12 to claim the first ever Battle to the Top 1v1 Basketball Tournament held at the JSC basketball complex on Sunday.
Lewis, who now plays for Da Project in the domestic league, had earlier edged fellow national player Adonis Humphreys 8-7 in the semifinals. The player had also beaten Hansel Piper 5-4 and Jaheem James 8-3 on his way to the final.
One member of the tournament’s organizing team, Carlena Humphreys, said that although they were anticipating a bigger turnout, they were pleased with the energy and promise that came along with it’s success.
“We were expecting a bit more in terms of participants but we did have 16 participants which meant we had three rounds of competition and overall, we have to say the tournament overall was a success. We have to thank those who would have participated and even the fans because we did have a good crowd out there last night at JSC,” he said.
On his way to the final, Wright had beaten Selassie Brathwaite 5-3 in the semis, Takeem Martin 5-1, Xavier Meade 7-2 and Tajahron Davis 6-5 all in the preliminary rounds.
Humphreys assured the tournament will return next year.
“In speaking with some of the guys who were playing and even with some of the persons who were just watching on, they said this is something they definitely want to see happening again and we do have plans, myself and my partner Nickon McGregor, we’re going to hopefully be hosting one around Christmas or around the December time but t is something that is going to be happening every year,” she said.
The tournament, the first of it’s kind in Antigua, paid out a cash prize of $700 to the winner.
