By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean basketball players, young men and women, who’ve graduated from high are about to get their big break. Sports Minister of State Devin Daly, in collaboration with the National Sports Council (NSC), Belize Tourism Board (BTB), and Lake Superior State University (LSSU), have announced a Basketball Athlete Recruitment event, creating a golden opportunity for local talent to take their game to the next level.

LSSU is a public college located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, in the United States. The LSSU Lakers compete in the NCAA Division II Regional Championship. Last season they were ranked third in their conference with a 23-5 record.
The NSC said LSSU scouts will be traveling to Belize with one mission: to recruit promising male and female student-athletes who dream of playing basketball at the collegiate level. The event is set to take place at 10:00 am on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the Belize Civic Center in Belize City, starting at 10:00 am.
“Don’t miss out on this opportunity to be scouted and potentially join a team that could lead to greater things!” the NSC said.
One key requirement? Prospective student-athletes must have completed high school to be eligible.
This initiative offers exposure to higher education institutions and athletic programs abroad. The organizers urge all Belizean ballers—near and far—to seize this opportunity.
Aspiring players are encouraged to show up, bring their A-game, and take advantage of the chance to be scouted.
