It took Megan Nestor fewer than five minutes into her final regular-season game with the University of North Texas women’s basketball team to set the American Conference record for rebounds in a season, 419. She ended Tuesday night, March 3, by extending the mark to an NCAA-leading 435, albeit in a UNT loss.
At Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas, the Mean Green were felled 60-55 by the Wichita State University Shockers. They finished the season with 17 wins and 13 losses, and a dream year for Nestor, the 6-4 sensation from Saint Lucia.
Already the school leader for single-season rebounds, Nestor entered the night just three boards shy of surpassing Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu’s record total of 418 set in 2023. She recorded 15 points and 19 boards for her 19th double-double of the year.
A strong candidate for American Conference Player of the Year, Nestor ended the regular season averaging 12.8 points and 14.5 rebounds per game. She leads the NCAA in total rebounds, offensive rebounds, rebounds per game, and offensive rebounds per game, and is the first player since at least 1982 to reach 27 rebounds three times in a single season.
In the regular-season finale, she shot just 3-9 from the field, but poured in 9-10 from the free-throw line, adding two assists and a block in a team-high 38 minutes. The Canaries native fell just short of her seventh game with 20 rebounds.
UNT scored the contest’s first 10 points and led for nearly 33 minutes of game time, but was unable to avoid their second loss in a row. Aysia Proctor had a team-high 19 points for her seventh straight double-digit scoring outing, while Chania Price went 3-for-3 from deep, en route to 13 points of her own.
