SPRINT DYNASTY - Jamaica’s Women’s 400m Is Starting To Look Dangerous
For decades, Jamaica has been known around the world for ...world-class women’s sprinting in the 100m and 200m. But now, the one-lap event is demanding serious attention, with Nickisha Pryce, Dejanea Oakley, and Stacey-Ann Williams helping push Jamaica’s women’s 400m into a new conversation.
Nickisha Pryce changed the standard when she became the first Jamaican woman to break 49 seconds in the 400m. Since then, Jamaica’s depth in the event has continued to grow, with more athletes entering the sub-50 conversation and the national 4x400m relay picture becoming even stronger.
In this CaribFocus Sports breakdown, we look at why the women’s 400m could become Jamaica’s next major sprinting weapon, how the event has evolved, and whether Jamaica now has the talent to challenge for individual medals, national records, and relay history.
The big question is no longer whether Jamaica has quality in the women’s 400m. The question is whether this event is now becoming one of Jamaica’s strongest championship lanes.

The Olympic 100m champion from Saint Lucia won the women’s 100 meters at the Bislett Games in 10.76 ...seconds, finishing ahead of Great Britain’s Amy Hunt and New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs.
The time came with a major catch: the wind was +3.2 m/s, which means the 10.76 will not count as a legal world-leading mark.
But even with the wind-aided result, Alfred’s performance sent a clear message. She is sharp, confident, and building serious momentum in both the 100m and 200m this season.

The LSU sprinter from the Cayman Islands stormed to a wind-legal 19.63 seconds in the ...men’s 200 meters, setting a world lead, Cayman Islands record, NCAA meet record, and new collegiate record.
Reid’s 19.63 broke the legendary 19.69 collegiate record set by Walter Dix of Florida State back in 2007.
This was a massive statement from one of the Caribbean’s fastest-rising sprint stars — and another reminder that the region keeps producing world-class talent on the global stage.

How fast can Jaiden Reid go next — 19.5 in the 200m, or 9.7 in the 100m?

Russell has established herself as the woman to beat in the women’s 100m hurdles. After winning Olympic gold ...in Paris in 12.33 seconds, the American lowered her personal best to 12.17 in 2025 and then stormed to 12.14 at the 2026 Xiamen Diamond League — just two hundredths outside Tobi Amusan’s 12.12 world record.
But Ackera Nugent has already shown that she can beat Russell when the pressure is highest.
The Jamaican defeated Russell to win the 2023 NCAA 100m hurdles title. She then produced one of the finest races of her career in Rome in 2024, running a personal best of 12.24 to defeat the newly crowned Olympic champion.
Their rivalry represents another chapter in the long history of Jamaican and American women pushing each other on the track.
Russell has the Olympic title and the fastest personal best. Nugent has major victories over her, explosive speed, and unfinished business after failing to reach the Tokyo 2025 World Championship final.
The question now is whether Ackera can rediscover her very best form and close the gap on a rival moving dangerously close to the world record.
This video breaks down their NCAA history, the Paris Olympic turning point, Nugent’s Rome response, Russell’s rise to 12.14, and what must happen for Ackera to win the next chapter.

At the Golden Gala, the Saint Lucian Olympic 100m champion powered away from American world champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden to ...win the women’s 200m in 21.93 seconds.
Jefferson-Wooden finished second in 22.17, but Alfred had the stronger second half and pulled away when it mattered most.
This was a major sprint matchup. Alfred is the reigning Olympic 100m champion, while Jefferson-Wooden won the 100m and 200m sprint double at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.
Now the rivalry gets even more interesting, especially with both athletes expected to meet again over the 100m at the Prefontaine Classic.

According to the reported result from the Golden Gala, the Jamaican hurdler powered through late to win in ...a season’s best 12.50 seconds, ahead of former world record holder Kendra Harrison and Dutch standout Nadine Visser.
This was not just about the win. It was about timing, composure, and finishing power.
With major names missing from the race, the field was still loaded — and Simmonds showed she can close against world-class competition when it matters.
Jamaica’s hurdles depth continues to look dangerous, with Danielle Williams also producing a season’s best performance in Rome.

The Bahamian superstar built one of the greatest 400m careers in modern track and field. She won Olympic gold in Rio 2016, ...defended that title in Tokyo with a national record of 48.36 seconds, then became both World Indoor and World Outdoor 400m champion in 2022.
But now the question around Shaunae Miller-Uibo has changed.
After injuries, motherhood, and a difficult Olympic title defense in Paris, the 400m landscape looks very different. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has run 47.78. Marileidy Paulino has gone 47.98. The event is moving into another gear.
At the same time, Miller-Uibo has a serious 200m résumé of her own. She owns a 21.74 personal best, won world bronze over 200m in 2017, and has already shown she can still be dangerous over the half-lap distance.
So is the 200m now her main event? Could she still produce another elite 400m? Or are we watching the next chapter of one of the Caribbean’s greatest sprint careers?
This video breaks down Shaunae Miller-Uibo’s 400m legacy, her shift toward the 200m, the changing women’s 400m landscape, and what her future could look like from here.

According to the reported result, Tina Clayton powered to victory in 10.85 seconds, leading a Jamaican clean sweep ahead ...of Lavanya Williams in 10.95 and Jonielle Smith in 11.00.
If confirmed officially, this would be a huge moment for Jamaica’s women’s sprint depth in 2026, especially with so many Jamaican women already pushing under the 11-second barrier this season.
Clayton’s start was sharp, her drive phase was powerful, and once she separated from the field, the race belonged to Jamaica. Lavanya Williams backed it up with a personal best, while Jonielle Smith completed the podium sweep.
Now the attention turns to Jamaica’s National Championships, where the battle for team spots could be one of the toughest in the world.
