The 41-year old enjoyed a successful playing career, most notably spending seven years with Newcastle.
He became a Premier League regular with the Toon and made 169 appearances for the club.
Williamson also turned out for Watford and Wolves during a long playing career.
He finished his career with non-league Gateshead and began his coaching career with the club, becamoming manager in 2019.
During a successful four-year spell, Williamson guided the club to the National League and solidified the team in the fifth tier.
He earned a move to MK Dons in League Two and led the club to the play-offs but left just a few months later in September last year to join Carlisle United.
But after just five wins from 25 games, he was sacked in February and the club went on to be relegated.
Speaking after the appointments were confirmed, Martin hailed his two new staff members.
He said: “I am delighted to have Mike and Sal join my team ahead of the new season.
“I played with Mike at Wycombe Wanderers so we go back a long way, and I know the qualities he can bring to this group. As a player he played at the very top level and is an experienced coach having been a manager himself.
“I am also really happy to bring Sal into the team, he has a lot of experience and a strong track record of developing goalkeepers. After speaking to him it was clear that his knowledge and character will be a real asset to the players and the staff, and I am looking forward to working with them both.”
