FORMER Rangers star Gennaro Gattuso has left Croatian side Hadjuk Split by mutual consent after their title charge fizzled out.
The 47-year-old leaves his post after less than a year in the job.
The club confirmed they had parted ways with the former AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Marseille coach and his backroom staff on its official website on Thursday.
A brief statement said: ” We thank you once again for everything and wish you the best in the rest of your life and coaching career.”
Gattuso led Split to third in the SuperSport HNL division, finishing two points behind champions Rijeka and second placed Dinamo Zagreb.
They looked on course to win their first title in 20 years starting their first 11 games unbeaten, but a poor run of form saw them relinquish their grip on the title.
Gattuso took charge of 43 games, winning 20 of them and losing nine.
Reports suggest he could now return to his native Italy, with Fiorentina and newly promoted Pisa looking for a new head coach.
The Italian is known for his fiery temperament on the park as well as off it.
He never shirked a challenge whether that on was the pitch or in the studio as an incredible bust-up in March illustrated.
Gattuso was scheduled to do a live interview with Croatian sports channel MAXSport1.
But things quickly unravelled.
Gattuso refused to shake the hand of Josko Jelicic, a former Hajduk Split star who also played for Sevilla and Dinamo Zagreb and earned a cap for his country whilst playing for Hajduk.
The AC Milan legend told Jelicic “I won’t give an answer to you, you speak too much” and made a mouthing gesture with his hand.
Gattuso was speaking in English but Jelicic responded in Spanish, saying “You played very bad!”
The pair were shouting over each other before the presenter had to step in to defuse the situation.
