A CLUB in the SPFL’s lower tiers have stunningly added a SECOND Scottish football veteran to their ranks this week.
Both have been free agents since the end of the 2024-25 season – one made his debut for the new side this week while the other’s signing was announced today.
And it’s from Rangers to Cove Rangers for Greg Stewart who has joined the Aberdeenshire club aged 35.
The attacker started off in the Gers’ youth ranks but didn’t get to play for the senior team until way down the line, coming back to Ibrox in 2019.
He would go on to be part of the squad which won the Scottish Premiership under Steven Gerrard in 2020-21 before departing soon after.
Stewart is familiar elsewhere in the country having also turned out for Dundee, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock.

But his move to League One Cove is a surprise return to home soil, with three of his four most recent clubs being in the Indian Super League.
Those are Jamshedpur, Mumbai City and Mohun Bagan.
He lifted the league title with the latter earlier this year before leaving at the end of the season.
Stewart’s put pen to paper with The Toonsers on a very short-term deal until January, just the same as an ex-Scotland international did last weekend.
36-year-old Chris Maguire played twice for the national team, as well as having short spells at Kilmarnock and Ayr and a lengthy one at Aberdeen at the beginning of his career.
The striker appeared in Nations Cup matches against Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to earn his two caps in 2011.
That was the same year he would leave the Dons to spend the bulk of his playing time in England.
Maguire spent the past two years with Eastleigh in the fifth tier of English football before being released in May.
He debuted for Cove in a 0-0 draw with Alloa last week, coming into the team before his signing had even been officially announced.
In fact, his traditional photo with the scarf above the head and online confirmation of the signing only came today alongside Stewart’s.
The club posted: “We are pleased to confirm the signing of Greg Stewart on a short-term contract until January.
“Having brought in Chris Maguire last weekend, on a similar basis, Greg and Chris will provide valuable experience and depth to the squad as we still have a significant number of core players unavailable through injury.
“Welcome to Cove Rangers!”
The Wee Rangers have struggled in the third tier this season with just nine points from 15 games, putting them in ninth place.
They’re ahead of Kelty Hearts only on goal difference.
But there’s no league action for them today, as it’s Scottish Cup Third Round weekend.
Cove are travelling to McDiarmid Park to face Championship side St Johnstone, and both Maguire and Stewart are on the bench.
