EFFINGHAM, S.C. — A Florence County sheriff’s deputy has died following a head-on collision, WYFF reported.
Authorities said the deputy was driving north on May 20 when his vehicle collided with a southbound SUV. Both drivers were transported to the hospital.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased deputy as 24-year-old Nathaniel “Nate” Ansay. Officials confirmed he was on duty at the time of the crash.
Deputy Ansay joined the sheriff’s office in October 2023 and graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy as a Class 1 officer in March.
“Nate never met a stranger and always had a huge smile on his face,” said Sheriff T.J. Joye. “He told me often how much he loved being a deputy. He will be greatly missed.”
The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
After 14 months of negotiations, the Pierce County Deputy Sheriff’s Guild says the county has proposed a 10% raise over three years, an offer the union says is “not competitive at all”
