By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Deportivo Saprissa secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Verdes FC on Tuesday evening at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan, maintaining their perfect start in the Concacaf Central American Cup.
The Costa Rican powerhouse struck early, with Deyver Vega finishing a pinpoint assist from Orlando Sinclair in just the 2nd minute. Saprissa’s aggressive start set the tone, but Verdes responded with determination, seeking redemption after last week’s 4–1 loss to Motagua.
Their breakthrough came in first-half stoppage time. Mexican midfielder Mauricio Lozano calmly slotted home in the 45+4 minute after a well-placed pass from Najib Guerra, sending the home crowd into celebration and leveling the score at 1–1.
Saprissa regained control shortly after the break. Sinclair, involved in the opener, turned scorer in the 52nd minute, restoring the visitors’ lead with a composed finish.
Much of the match unfolded under a heavy downpour, adding a layer of intensity and unpredictability to the contest. Despite the slick conditions, Verdes played a much stronger game than in their previous outing. In the closing stages, the Belizean side pushed Saprissa deep into their own half, applying sustained pressure in search of an equalizer. Their tactical discipline and collective effort were evident, but they fell just short of securing what would have been a well-deserved draw.
With the result, Saprissa top Group C with six points from two matches, while Verdes remain winless after two outings.
