Teddy Daley, executive member of the athletics association, has confirmed his intention to contest the upcoming presidential election while emphasizing that current focus remains firmly on athlete development and upcoming competitions.
When asked about presidential ambitions on the Good Morning Jojo Sports Show, Daley stated: “When the time comes around, yes,” confirming his candidacy for the association’s top position. However, they stressed that immediate priorities center on supporting athletes through crucial upcoming competitions.
“Right now, we have some very serious issues before us that can be very beneficial to our athletes,” Daley explained, noting that despite any internal differences, the current team is “working together to make sure that the athletes benefit.”
The association has significant competitions approaching that will provide vital platforms for local athletes. Three athletes have already qualified for the Pan American Games on the 23rd, meeting Pan Am Sports qualification standards rather than local benchmarks.
Additional opportunities include the Pan American Games on the 20th and the NACAC Open Seniors, with many athletes using these competitions to pursue scholarship opportunities and team selections.
“Some of those athletes would be vying for scholarships, and those who did not qualify for the Pan Am on the 23, the Pan Am on the 20 later in the year, they’re still vying for positions on those teams,” Daley noted.
While expressing some surprise at President Everton Cornelius’ statement that no commitment was given for an early election, Daley suggested current timing might not be ideal.
“Even if the election was held now, to me, it might become a distraction,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus on athletes during this critical period.
With the season ending soon, elections are expected within months, but Daley stressed the unique nature of current opportunities: “It’s a once in a decade kind of opportunity and we don’t want to really drop that ball.”
Regarding membership and club finances, Daley confirmed that several individuals previously disqualified for financial delinquency have not resolved their situations. “We’ve had several executive meetings and nothing came to the meeting in relation to those persons,” he stated, suggesting the disqualification letters were justified.
However, all active clubs in Antigua are currently financial, with registration requirements ensuring both athletes and clubs maintain good standing for competitions.
Based on recent technical meetings, the Treasury confirms that clubs are up to date and all registered athletes have met their financial obligations.
