President of the Antigua and Barbuda Draughts Association (ABDA), Trevor Cranston, said the body’s aim is to take the game into a number of communities across Antigua as they seek to grow membership.
This initiative, he said, is in addition to the programme currently ongoing in a number of schools.
“Taking it into the village means then you have more people becoming aware and participating so yes, we do have intentions of taking draught into the villages, but also too, which is important, we are doing draught at the schools. Presently, we are at the Greenbay Primary School. We did do some tutoring program at the Bendals Primary School and also the Potters Primary School so the intention of the Antigua and Barbuda Draughts Association is to spread the game of draught throughout Antigua and Barbuda,” he said.
The president said the programme has been widely accepted in the schools, adding they are hoping to relaunch a schools competition first held in 2019.
“What I do, I will go down there and I know schools have just reopened so I’m going to give the principal and teachers some time to get their plans together. But I must say, the excitement among the students is fantastic, especially at the Greenbay Primary School and that’s my alma mater. I’m from the Gray’s Green community so I have to give back. Every other Friday, I will go down there and teach the students how to play the game of draughts and if I may mention this too, in 2019, we held a junior competition where you have students from the St Joseph’s Academy, the Antigua Grammar School and also the Greenbay Primary School and the Pares Secondary School participating,” he said.
Cranston was elected as the association’s first president back in May of 2017 and has served three consecutive terms at the helm of the organisation.
