By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Costa Rican powerhouse Deportivo Saprissa touched down in Belize on Sunday ahead of their 2025 Concacaf Central American Cup Group C clash against Verdes FC, set for Tuesday evening at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan. Upon arrival, Los Morados held a recovery session at the MCC Grounds on Sunday and completed their official field recognition training on Monday at the FFB Stadium — aligning sharp tactical work with tournament protocols.

Verdes FC welcomed their visitors with a spirited post: “Deportivo Saprissa is in Belize. VERDES FOR LIFE.”
🟣 Saprissa: Wanchope’s Well-Drilled Contenders Arrive in Form
Coached by Costa Rican football legend Paulo César Wanchope, Saprissa arrive riding impressive momentum. They defeated AD San Carlos 2–0 last Saturday in Costa Rica’s top-tier league and triumphed by the same score over fellow Group C contenders Cartaginés last week in their Central American Cup opener.
Founded in 1935, Saprissa remain one of Central America’s most decorated clubs, boasting 38 Costa Rican league titles, six UNCAF Interclub Cups, and three Concacaf Champions Cup triumphs. Their squads routinely include national team regulars and they’re renowned for their technical fluency, tactical discipline and intensity.

🟢 Verdes: Building on Domestic Success, Eyeing a Historic Breakthrough
Verdes FC enter the match looking to rebound from a 4–1 defeat to Honduran side Motagua in their opening fixture. The Green Machine reignited form with a commanding 7–0 win over Capital Sport Club in their Premier League of Belize opener — goals came from Desmond Wade, Daiver Vega, Jahyrl Smith, Felix Martinez, Ze Carlos Carrillo, and an own goal by Louis Valdez.
Verdes hold a tough track record against Costa Rican opponents. They lost 3–0 to Liga Deportiva Alajuelense in the inaugural Central American Cup in 2023.
This fixture marks Saprissa’s third visit to Belize and fourth match against a Belizean side. On Wednesday, July 31, 2019, they overcame the Bandits 3–1 at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan. Their first trip was on Sunday, May 23, 1999 — a 2–0 win over Juventus at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town in the UNCAF Club Championship, part of a five-team group that featured Comunicaciones (Guatemala), Luis Ángel Firpo (El Salvador) and Motagua (Honduras).
Saprissa’s last meeting with a Belizean opponent was a second victory over the Belmopan Bandits — a 3–1 win in San José on August 7, 2019, closing out their two-legged Concacaf League tie with back-to-back triumphs.
Among Verdes’ five total encounters with Costa Rican teams, their finest result was a 1–1 draw against Puntarenas at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio in the UNCAF Interclub Chamionship. Deris Benavides scored for Verdes in that match which featured Belizean goalkeeper Shane Orio Moody, who was then playing for the Costa Rican side, during the round of 16.
📅 The Road Ahead
With just four group fixtures and two at home, Verdes will be eager to collect maximum points on Tuesday before hitting the road: they’ll face CA Independiente in Panama on Thursday, August 14, followed by Cartaginés in Costa Rica on Wednesday, August 20.
Kick-off against Saprissa is scheduled for 6:00 pm at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan — a match that could shape Belizean hopes in this year’s regional tournament.
