By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a social media post on Wednesday, veteran Belizean defender and former national team captain Ian Gaynair confirmed his departure from Port Layola FC, signaling the end of a transformative chapter for both player and club. While Gaynair has not yet officially signed with Belmopan FC, multiple sources indicate he is expected to join the capital-based team ahead of the upcoming Premier League of Belize season.

A Farewell with Purpose
“Thank you, Port FC. It’s been an amazing journey,” Gaynair wrote in his farewell message. “Bringing the trophy back to [Belize City] after almost 20 years and leading a young team that had never won any trophy before to the Champions League—I’m proud of what we built together.”
Though Port Layola is a relatively new club, its meteoric rise to the top of Belizean football has been nothing short of remarkable. Under Gaynair’s leadership, the team captured its first national title and earned a historic berth in the Concacaf Champions League—an achievement that marked a broader resurgence for Belize City football on the national stage.

A Candid Reflection
Gaynair’s farewell wasn’t just a thank-you—it was a candid reflection on the challenges that come with success and he didn’t shy away from addressing internal challenges:
“To my teammates who looked up to me as captain, thank you. I’ve been called to take my talent and leadership elsewhere, but Port FC will always have my heart,” he said.
“I hope to return one day, because there’s something special here. But to go further, we must put aside family ties, feelings, and of course egos. That’s what cost us our last championship. We must try to practice more professionalism because this is still lacking here.”
His words struck a chord with fans and players alike, offering both gratitude and a call for growth within Belizean football culture.

What’s Next for Gaynair?
While Belmopan FC has yet to officially announce the signing, Gaynair’s move would bring veteran leadership to a squad looking to reestablish itself as a title contender. His experience, both domestically and internationally, could prove invaluable in anchoring a new defensive line and mentoring younger players.
As for Port Layola, Gaynair hinted at possible return later on.
“This isn’t goodbye, just see you later,” Gaynair concluded—leaving the door open for a future return, and perhaps, unfinished business.
