After three days of field events finals, Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School and St Joseph’s Convent are leading the Island Champs standings ahead of track finals this Sunday at Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.
SJC are narrowly ahead of their southern rivals for the girls’ crown, as the blue and white take aim at a third consecutive title. They have 93 points, while VFCSS has 85. Saint Lucia Sports Academy are in a distant third place with 53 points. Castries Comprehensive Secondary School and Micoud Secondary round out the top five.
Vieux Fort’s boys, meanwhile, are just ahead of St Mary’s College, 104 to 99. The last two boys’ champions are well ahead of SLSA and Micoud on 66 and 65, and Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School on 56.
The leading schools widened their leads on the third and final day of field event finals, Tuesday, March 17. Finals were contested in the high jump at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground and the shot put at Saint Lucia Sports Academy.
Nasri Edwin won the Under-14 boys high jump with a 1.59m clearance for VFCSS. Long jump champion Randall Monroe added the high jump title with a 1.75m effort. The SLSA student is qualified for the CARIFTA Games in the high jump.
Jeanni Thomas took the U14 shot put with a 10.77m mark for the TVET Institute – Anse Ger. Eavan Edgar of VFCSS threw 13.28m to add the shot put title to his discus throw gold from the day prior. Also, Sean Pilgrim of VFCSS won his second event, pushing the shot to 12.60m to win the Under-18 class. Shekim McRae of Sir Arthur Lewis Community College threw 13.85m to win in the Under-20 category.
Jahelle Henry was victorious in the under-14 girls’ high jump, clearing 1.35m to win for Corinth Secondary. In the Under-16 division, Nyla Joseph of Anse Ger Sec cleared 1.54m for gold.
Tamar Joseph of VFCSS threw 8.54m to win the Under-14 girls’ shot put. Her teammate, Neriah Charlery, produced a 10.37m performance for Under-16 gold, ahead of track star Shaimaelle Durand. Autumn Louis won the Under-18’s for SJC, with a 10.81m throw. Two-time Under-18 winner Jennica Albert of SALCC graduated smoothly to the Under-20 ranks, with a throw of 8.87m for her third straight school title in this event.
Action continues at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground on Wednesday, as athletes strive to win spots in Saturday’s finals at the same venue. The semifinals will also include competition for Under-20 track athletes, who did not have a preliminary round last week because of their relatively small numbers.
