GRAPEVINE, Texas – Vince Anderson was honored with the George Dales Award on Monday at the annual USTFCCCA Convention.
Anderson was feted during Opening Session inside the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center.
The George Dales Award is named in honor of longtime Western Michigan coach George Dales for his relentless pursuit in the growth and development of cross country and track & field over more than half a century. This award is presented annually to an individual who, like Dales, enhanced the profession of coaching cross country and track & field.
Anderson’s commitment to coaching education traces back to his years as a volunteer assistant under Hall of Fame coach Tom Tellez. From 1986 to 1988, Anderson absorbed Tellez’s methods while watching him guide athletes like nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis, as well as other Olympic gold medalists like Leroy Burrell and Joe DeLoach, among others.
His legendary career then carried him to took him to SEC powerhouses Tennessee and Texas A&M. Across those stops, his athletes and teams amassed NCAA titles, highlighted by a remarkable sweep of every sprint, hurdle, and relay event at the national level – a collection of titles that took Anderson 29 years to complete.
All the while, Anderson pays its forward with namesake coaching clinics, his work with the USATF, as well as the Association’s own Track and Field Academy.
