Wadadli United FC clinched the second instalment of the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) Female Knockout Classic held on Sunday, recording a one-nil triumph over Cutting Edge FC at the FA’s Technical Center on the Sir Sydney Walling Highway.
It means that Wadadli FC walks away with the $2,500 winners’ purse while Cutting Edge takes home $1,500 as runners up.
United, on their way to the final, defeated Lady Masters 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after their 30 minutes encounter. Prior to their triumph in the semifinals, United had defeated last Sunday’s champions, Empire Trendsetters by a 2-1 margin.
Meanwhile, Cutting Edge FC also had the better of Empire Trendsetters in the semis after the Gray’s Farm team was chosen to contest a ‘best loser’ eliminator against Lady Fort Road as Ottos Tigress, for a second straight week, could not field a team for the knockout. Cutting Edge had earlier beaten Lady Fort Road 2-1.
Wadadli United dominated the individual awards with Jada Benjamin crowned Most Valuable Player (MVP) while senior national player, Gabriel DeSouza, was adjudged best striker. The best defender award went to Carlene Thomas while Kanika Buckley was the best midfielder. The best goalkeeper award went to Jewel Harve.
