The Saint Lucia Kings have announced that David Wiese will lead the Boys in Blue in their Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League title defence this season. This highly anticipated announcement follows the decision by former skipper Faf du Plessis to step away from the Kings, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.
All-rounder Wiese, 40, has represented both South Africa, his country of birth, and Namibia at the international level. While he has never been a regular captain at the international or franchise level, he has led Namibia in select matches, especially in T20Is. His leadership stints were brief but impactful, particularly during Namibia’s rise in associate cricket.
Wiese, who has been with the Kings for three of the last four seasons, is also a genuine match-winner with the ball, frequently breaking key partnerships and bowling during crucial phases. His batting contributions have often come in the form of explosive cameos, with a high strike rate that made him a valuable lower-order finisher.
“Wiese is someone who’s part of the family, who’s been with us over a number of years, putting on some excellent performances throughout the years,” Kings head coach and former skipper, Daren Sammy, said. “We cannot wait to start our first home game on August 23.
