West Indies head coach Daren Sammy on Thursday sent a series of screaming social media messages, begging to go home as his team remained in India after their early exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Sammy posted in post on X, saying “I just wanna go home”.
This was Thursday morning Indian Time. West Indies lost to India on Sunday night and were eliminated from the marquee global event. The normal series of events would be departure on Monday via Dubai, but that was not possible due to airspace closure and the tension from the unrest in the Middle East.
Sammy later posted “At least an update, tell us something. Today, tmw (tomorrow), next week. It’s been 5 days”. He later posted “Got an update… that’s all wi wanted”.
NATION NEWS has been in contact with sources with close knowledge of the situation. They indicated the ICC and CWI have been in constant dialogue around the clock all this week in all time zones. The possible solutions are charter flights with two routes under conversation – India to London and commercial flights to home destinations; or India to Barbados and commercial flights to home destinations. The possible departure date is Friday, but this could not yet be confirmed.
In a media statement earlier this week, CWI said they were working with the sport’s global body (ICC) to make safe travel arrangements for the players and staff. The ICC, headquartered in Dubai, earlier said that they had activated contingency plans for their personnel, who were scheduled to transit through Dubai for onward travel to their home countries. “The safety and well-being of our players, coaches, and officials remain our highest priority”, CWI added.
