By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Reigning champions Yo Creek United and Mi Gente of Guinea Grass are set for a decisive battle on Sunday, May 11, at Louisiana Football Field in Orange Walk, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 pm. Despite securing a 4-2 victory in the first leg of the Orange Walk Football Association Closing Championship semifinals, Yo Creek United will be significantly short-handed after three of their players were handed 19-month suspensions following allegations of racial abuse.

A controversial first leg
Yo Creek United took early control in the opening match, with Liam Reyes scoring twice in the 12th and 17th minutes. Mi Gente responded in the second half with two goals from Mark Bainton in the 61st and 65th minutes, leveling the scoreline. However, Yo Creek United regained the lead with strikes from Allen Castillo and Axel Alamilla, making it 4-2 before the match was abandoned in the 83rd minute due to concerns over racism.
Following an investigation, the Orange Walk Football Association (OWFA) suspended Luis Chi, Juan Diaz, and Amilcar Jones for one year and seven months, marking the first time players in Belize have faced such disciplinary action for racial slurs.
The stakes for Sunday’s clash
With three key players absent, Yo Creek United will need to adjust their strategy as they aim to defend their advantage and secure a place in the OWFA Amateur 1st Division Championship Final. Meanwhile, Mi Gente will look to capitalize on their opponents’ weakened squad and overturn the deficit.
Expect a fiercely contested match, with emotions running high as both teams fight for a spot in the final.
Progresso and San Jose Pumas battle in the other semifinal
Before Yo Creek United and Mi Gente take the field, Progresso FC and San Jose Pumas will face off in the other semifinal at 5:00 pm. Their first leg ended in a 0-0 stalemate, leaving everything to play for in the return match.
With two semifinals matches on the schedule, Sunday promises to be an intense day of football at Louisiana Football Field.
