The Trojan 4×1 squad, with all but Johnnie Blockburger back from ’24, projects as the team fave’s highest placer. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

THERE WAS A TIME when USC was the undisputed king of collegiate track & field, racking up national title after national title. But not since ’76 will you find the SoCal crew listed as the team champs. Quincy Watts’s crew currently projects to end that long time in the wilderness.

USC was just tabbed for 3rd in the year’s first chart, but in the last month they added 6 points to their total, while Texas A&M and Arkansas both took major hits. The Aggies definitely remain in striking distance, but the Hogs may have fallen too far to recover.

If the team battle comes down to a climactic 4×4 (as it so often does) A&M is the predicted winner, with Arkansas No. 3. USC doesn’t project to have a team in the final, so would potentially have to sit on the sidelines, watching it play out.

The 10-deep predictions for each event (‘ = athlete not eligible for U.S. international teams):
