Dover-based club Paradise cling to the narrowest of leads atop the Barbados Football Association’s Premier League table after eight rounds of action. Their advantage, however, could disappear this weekend, as they sit out while the ninth round kicks off at the Wildey Technical Centre on Sunday.
The league leaders are ahead on goal difference, with 17 points and a +16 goal tally, just edging second-placed Ellerton, who also have 17 points but a +7 goal difference. Last Tuesday’s clash between the two sides ended in a goalless draw, leaving the race for the top spot tighter than ever.
Kickstart Rush are one point behind on 16 points with a goal difference of +9, while Brittons Hill United are fourth, also on 16 points, but with a goal difference of +3.
Defending champions Weymouth Wales, who have dominated local football over the last five years, find themselves in an unusual position in fifth. They are by no means out of the running however, having amassed 15 points so far, which is just one victory from the top of the table.
In sixth position, UWI Blackbirds have endured an inconsistent season, having lost their opening three games, before winning their next three. Slightly off the pace on 9 points with a goal difference of -2, the rebuild continues following the departure of several key players.
Breathing down their necks in seventh position is Eyre’s Meat Shop Pride of Gall Hill, who also have 9 points, but featuring a goal difference of -6. Eighth placed Bagatelle on 8 points, will be keen to move further away from the relegation zone, having been promoted from Division One after last season.
Also making the step up this season was St Andrew Lions. They have struggled thus far, while also parting ways with their head coach. Victory over Gall Hill on Tuesday provided a welcomed boost, but they are still ninth and in the relegation zone on 5 points.
Bottom of the table Wotton have serious problems and are without a point, heading into this weekend’s games. Glimpses of quality were evident during last Sunday’s game against Brittons Hill which they led for large periods, before being beaten 3-2. They will be eyeing another improved performance, when they tackle Bagatelle this Sunday March 8th at 4 p.m.
Wales could meanwhile go from fifth, to the top of the table, with victory over Pride of Gall Hill at 6pm, while Ellerton would retake the lead, if they defeat Brittons Hill in the nightcap game. Based on results of the Wales vs Gall Hill game however, Brittons Hill could also top the league if they defeat Ellerton.
