Antigua and Barbuda Benna Boys suffered a narrow one-nil defeat at the hands of the visiting Cuba senior men’s team as the country’s slim hopes of advancing from Group A of the Concacaf leg of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers all but vanished when the teams met at the ABFA’s Technical Center here on Friday.
The lone goal of the contest came just on the stroke of halftime when midfielder Pedro Bravo Soto silenced the home crowd with a close range effort, netting in 45+3 (added time), to hand Cuba their second win of the tournament and increase their chances of advancing as the second best team in the group behind Honduras.
Soto sent a right-footed effort from the center of the 18-yards box into the top left corner of the net past goalkeeper Taj Moore.
Antigua and Barbuda struggled against the more organized Cuba outfit with the visitors enjoying over 70 percent of the possession while producing 19 shots throughout the match with three on target. A new-look Benna Boys squad managed only four shots in the match with one on target.
The home team was reduced to 10 men in added time after Leroy Graham was shown straight red card for violent conduct.
Antigua and Barbuda travel to Honduras for their next encounter on June 10.
