Princess Margaret School (PMS) found success at this year’s Trinbago Schools’ Relays held in Trinidad on July 3, claiming three gold and two silver medals from the six relay events in which they competed.
PMS captured gold in both the 4×100 and the 4×200 girls relay finals while winning silver in the 4×400 meters girls event. In the boys category, PMS won gold in the 4×200 meters event and silver in the 4×100 meters event.
Robyn Nathaniel, who travelled with the team as PRO, commended the more seasoned campaigners in the team for successfully guiding the first-timers to this event.
“What we had to our advantage this year was that it was our second time around and so we kind of knew what to expect and we had some second-timers coming as well and that kind of helped with preparing for this particular meet. There are people like Kasiya and Geo [Geolyna] who were on the first round [trip] and they are experienced runners as well so they were kind of able to share their experience from last year and tell people what to expect,” she said.
A contingent of 14 athletes and four officials, including Principal, Dr Colin Greene, made the trip to Trinidad for the event.
Nathaniel hailed the event as positive, adding that it gives young student athletes an opportunity to pit their skills against their peers from across the Caribbean.
“Everybody knows PMS is dominant in track & field in Antigua and Barbuda and that’s a given but how well are we able to stand or how well will our Antiguan athletes stand once they get the opportunity to go against their regional counterparts and so, between last year and this year, I think that’s one of the greatest things I find and I think that’s one of the things they could continue to market on,” she said.
Full team: Kasiya Daley, Geolyna Dowdye and Shenika Bentick. Also making the trip are Conroy Wilson, Ryan Aikin, Daniel Bailey, Juari Lewis, Joakim Browne, Shamar Walters, Jolisa Cato, Aleema Rhiney, Tianna Henry, Kiara Francis and Rhianna Philip.
