Goals flowed, and excitement permeated the atmosphere as the second edition of the Antigua Cup International Youth Football Tournament kicked off with a bang on Sunday at the Buckley’s Primary School playing field.
Twenty-five goals were scored across four matches after seven of the participating 12 teams took part in the opening proceedings.
In the U13 age-group, Lion Cubs beat host club Young Warriors 6-2.
Cubs, coached by former national team defender Ivor “Ninja” Luke, returned to defeat newcomers Freeman’s Village 5-0 in the U15 age group. Another debutant, All Saints Attackers, overcame Urlings 6-1 before visitors Bath United won 2-0 over Warriors.
Former England and Liverpool striker Emile Heskey implored the players to give the Antigua Cup their best efforts as they strive to become good players.
Lucaso Brumant, the president of CPTSA Wings Sports Club, who stepped in at short notice, called on government and parents to offer more support to the young players and programnes like the Antigua Cup.
Sowerby Gomes, the national football technical director, said he was looking forward to seeing the progression of the starlets throughout the tournament.
Warriors’ president Colin James, the tournament director, said his club was excited to be staging the tournament again.
Matches are played daily until Sunday, starting at 3pm at Buckley’s.
