Leg spinner Sainavi Kambalapalli snapped up six wickets for eight runs to lead the Leeward Islands Under-19s Women to a comprehensive 81-run victory over the Windward Islands in the West Indies Rising Stars Championship on Saturday at the Diego Martin Sports Complex.
The Leeward Islands batted first and posted 126 all out in 26.5 overs as Kambalapalli top-scored with 27 runs off 25 balls, including four boundaries, while Katherine Bean Rosarion contributed 26 runs with five fours. Aaliyah Weekes remained unbeaten on 21 to help the team reach a defendable total.
The Windward Islands bowling was led by Amiah Gilbert (3/23), with Selena Ross, Shadia Seaman, and Delisha Francois each taking two wickets. However, 33 extras, including 28 wides, proved costly.
Kambalapalli’s bowling performance was the defining moment of the match. The spinner claimed an extraordinary 6 wickets for just 8 runs in 4.4 overs, including two maidens, to demolish the Windwards batting lineup.
Her figures of 6/8 represent one of the finest bowling performances in the tournament, as she systematically dismantled the opposition with accuracy and variations. Captain Jahzara Claxton provided support with one for six, while Courtney Browne and Gabrielle Harrylall each took one wicket.
The Windward Islands never recovered from Kambalapalli’s assault, collapsing to 45 all out in just 15.4 overs. The 81-run victory provides a significant boost for the Leeward Islands’ championship campaign. After rain-affected matches had disrupted their momentum, the result pushed the Leeward Islands youngsters into the top three of the standings. They will play Guyana on Tuesday at the same venue.
