The head coach of the All Saints United FC and former national player, Schyan Jeffers, said his team is not under any pressure heading into the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Sheild slated to start this weekend in Trinidad.
Jeffers was responding to questions regarding his expectations of the team coupled with the successful showing of local rivals, Grenades FC, in last year’s tournament when they finished second after being beaten one-nil by Jamaica’s Arnett Gardens in the final.
“There is no pressure but, certainly, from last year when Grenades entered the championship they definitely gave me some pointers with how they played and the level of competition, so they have pretty much prepared me for this sort of situation. Everybody is fully focussed, fully committed and they are ready to go,” he said.
United, last week, named a 21-member squad for the CFU tournament which acts as a qualifier for the Concacaf Club Championships.
Jeffers said the players have been working hard and looking forward to the experience.
“A lot of them have been playing national ball for a while and then they left from the World Cup qualifiers and went straight into the Club Championships. Most of the guys that play with the national team — at least six or seven of them — play with us, so the team is pretty much [gelled] and confident. We are looking forward for this type of exposure, these types of games because that’s the next level we need to go to and we relish the opportunity very much,” the coach said.
United will open their Group C campaign against SCSA Eagles out of St Maarten on July 27.
The other teams in Group C are Police FC (Trinidad); Wolues FC (BVI); Weymouth Wales FC (Barbados); and SV Transvaal (Suriname).
All Saints United qualified for the CFU tournament after winning the 2023/4 Premer Division title on goal difference.
