Competitive draughts players across Antigua will lock horns in battle this weekend as they compete for top honours in the Cool & Smooth International Draughts Extravaganza slated for 22-25 September at the Gray’s Farm Community and Sports Complex.
President of the Antigua and Barbuda Draughts Association (ABDA), Trevor Cranston, said the competition is open to all and sundry.
“The tournament fee for members is EC $20 and if you’re a non-member you pay EC $25. If you notice, we say the Cool & Smooth Invitational which means then, if you’re not a member of the Draughts Association you can come and participate in that tournament. We’re looking for about maybe 15-16 players to participate, but as many that come and register, it could be 50 or 20, we’ll certainly welcome them in this magnificent tournament” he said.
Micah Samuel, the Secretary of the Draughts Association, also encouraged members of the public to join the organisation, both as players and administrators.
“We’re looking for as much people or players as possible and even if you’re not participating in the competition, please come and join and be a member of the Draughts Association. It’s only a meagre fee of $5 a month. I think that works out to about $60 annually and you can be a vibrant member, if you want to, of the Antigua Barbuda Draughts Association. Again, we’re embracing everyone and anyone to come in and be a part of us,” he said.
Action moves off at 6 pm nightly and concludes at 10 pm. Individuals wishing to participate can get more information by calling 764-2089, 723-4857 or 782-8331.
